Discernment Counselling: Should We Stay or Separate?

A focused process for couples where one or both partners are unsure whether relationship repair, separation, or another path is right.

Common concerns

What often brings couples here.

One partner is leaning out
The other partner wants repair
Separation is being seriously considered
You are unsure whether couples therapy fits
You want clarity before making a major decision
The relationship feels stuck between hope and exhaustion

Who this is for

  • Mixed-agenda couples
  • Married couples considering separation
  • Partners unsure about therapy
  • Couples seeking clarity

What we work toward

  • Clarify each partner position
  • Understand the paths available
  • Decide whether to try couples therapy
  • Make major decisions more thoughtfully

Appointments, fees, and insurance

Relationship Clinic offers virtual relationship therapy to clients in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, as well as in-person appointments in Thornhill. Fees, therapist availability, appointment format, and therapist matching are discussed during your complimentary consultation. Many extended health insurance plans cover psychotherapy services, and we can help you determine whether direct billing is available with your insurance provider. Receipts are provided for eligible services and can be submitted for reimbursement when applicable.

Clarity Before Repair Work

Discernment counselling is different from standard couples therapy. It is not primarily designed to solve the relationship problems immediately. Instead, it helps couples slow down and understand whether they want to pursue repair, move toward separation, or pause while they gather more clarity.

When One Partner Is Unsure

This process can be useful when one partner is leaning out and the other wants to save the relationship. Sessions make room for both experiences without forcing premature reconciliation or rushing separation. The focus is thoughtful decision-making.

Competence and Fit

Discernment counselling is a distinct, structured approach. During your complimentary consultation, we confirm whether a therapist with appropriate training is available and whether this service fits your situation. If another service is more appropriate, we will recommend that instead.
